Scientists who want a better alternative to the current academic system.
Founders with a bold technical or scientific thesis that needs research before fundraising.
Engineers and machine learning specialists who want to apply their skills to life sciences research.
Pioneers who want to support scientific projects and biotechs e.g. IP lawyers, investors.
"LabDAO will allow everyone, regardless of degree status, where you are in the world, or your finances, to contribute.
It will revolutionize the way we do science, from the way projects are funded and research is done, to result dissemination. I'm just happy to be here on the ride."
Hossam Zaki
Brown Medicine; Harvard DBMI
"LabDAO will enable exponential growth in scientific innovation in the coming decade."
Arye Lipman
MarsBio
"Biotechnology will transform our world for the better. To see this future sooner we need to open up access to scientific tools and funding.
LabDAO is a new model for doing science, but more importantly, it's a community of scientists and engineers who share this same bold vision."
Boris Dyakov
University of Toronto
"LabDAO is building game changing infrastructure for decentralized science.
Their Virtual Lab tool democratizes access to cutting-edge scientific tools, fostering global collaboration and forwarding human progress."
Kenneth Francis

"Like many researchers, I've seen organizations repeatedly say 'no' to important and novel projects, often because they clash with institutional or short-term priorities.
This slows down the pace of scientific innovation. In contrast, LabDAO is a place that says 'yes.' "
Stanley Bishop
ex-Drift Biotech, DeepForest Sciences
LabDAO is a place for self-organization. Members organize in Labs which are focused on specific scientific topics (e.g. aging biology, oceanic metagenomics, discourse graphs), and Groups that are focused on broader skills (e.g. data science, communications, mechanism design). Both are spaces for ideation and peer-to-peer education. The LabDAO core supports the formation of new Labs and Groups.
Projects are the atomic unit of scientific collaboration. They are light-weight token-based online entities that are made up of less than 7 members that have gathered around a new idea. After formation, a project applies for funding from a global audience of funders. Contributions are measured in tokens (co-ownership is the new co-authorship). Experiments and Computation are done using LabDAO’s distributed network of infrastructure partners. Results are published using conventional venues, although we encourage the use of pre-prints and experimentation with new forms of science.
Projects are token-based entities that, based on their outcome, can mature into non-profits or for-profits over time. What started as a single bold Project can grow into an independent virtual non-profit Lab that goes on to launch more Projects - or - the next fully virtual biotech company. You shouldn't have to choose in the beginning.
Your future should be determined by your ideas, not by traditional academic gatekeepers or arbitrary institutional priorities. Anyone with a great idea deserves access to funding, expert peers, and world class tools.
At LabDAO you’ll find a mix of biologists, bioinformaticians, machine learning specialists, engineers and more. Our community members are located in 15 countries across 3 continents.
Members in the LabDAO community are working on rainforest monitoring, supporting marine biodiversity, and accelerating science with open knowledge graphs. These projects are choosing how to create impact - including peer reviewed papers, open source tools and startups.
LabDAO has an open and self-organizational model. Anyone can create a group around a shared interest within the community.
